Copenhagen – August 1965. The photographer Hubertus Hierl is wandering around Copenhagen. He wants to photograph the city’s young people. He is advised to visit a square with a large fountain in the university district. That is where the young people gather. He sets off. And it is right by the fountain that he first encounters these young people, loitering like idlers. Distinctive features: young people, long hair, scruffy, indifferent to their surroundings. And they walk around wearing worn-out military parkas covered in graffiti, on which they write their protests, what they love, what they hate. Their motto: Take it easy. Do these young people have any role models? Yes: Diogenes.
The photographer mingles with this colourful crowd and soon realises that no one objects to him pointing his camera at them. The result is an extensive series of photographs capturing the scene in this square, so characteristic of young people in the mid-1960s.
