Hanabusa Shinzo began his interviews in 1964 dealing with social issues concerning rural farming villages as he travelled across the nation, reflecting the changing agricultural situation, people's lives and the distortions that occurred in the era when agriculture was modernised along with strong economic growth. He photographed farmers' wives as they assembled electronic parts. This led to other related topics, such as the mechanization of agriculture, the use of agricultural chemicals and farmers working in cities during the off-season.
