This is the second volume of the two-part catalogue accompanying the exhibition of Gervasio Sánchez’s work on enforced disappearances in various parts of the world, including Guatemala, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Iraq, El Salvador, Peru, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Spain. The exhibition, curated by Sandra Balsells, was shown simultaneously at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Castile and León, La Casa Encendida and the Centre for Contemporary Culture in Barcelona, with different exhibition layouts.
The book is organised into chapters dedicated to each of the disappeared individuals in the various countries, depicted through portraits — sometimes merely notes — held by one of their relatives. Thus, although the compositional scheme varies slightly from country to country, there is a formal consistency across all the series. The family members always look directly at the camera, and the extreme sharpness of the images allows us to perceive the emotion in their gazes. Sometimes their portraits take up the entire page; at other times, we are presented with a mosaic comprising many portraits.
