“Partly for that sense of uselessness and demotivation that overwhelms me when, with no commissioned work, I find myself photographing official events side by side with dozens of other photographers; partly for the secret hope of being able to live a page of history like those imagined by looking at the photographs of the occupations of the large estates in our South after the Second World War, I began to do some research with the intent to portray the agricultural laborers in turmoil organizing themselves in the Center-South of the Country”.

Giaccone went to Lisbon in August 1975, at the hottest moment of that "Carnation Revolution" that had exploded the previous year. He was a freelancer with no assignment, therefore free to choose how to move. Among the hundreds of reporters sent by the press from all over the world, Giaccone looked for different stories to tell, far from images already seen. He left the capital and, after some research, arrived in Couço, a village in the province of Ribatejo, where the important social phenomenon of the occupation of large estates was taking place: laborers who had always lived in a condition of subordination, become aware of their strength and tried to occupy and cooperatively manage the lands taken from the owners. Upon returning to Italy, the photographs were published only in the far-left paper Lotta Continua, with the photographer's captions as the only text.
For about ten years this work remained almost forgotten in Giaccone's archive, until, in 1985, the memories and a reflection on that experience resurfaced in the meeting with the writer Antonio Tabucchi-writer with many personal and cultural ties to Portugal. The idea was born of a return to the same places, after ten years, to see what remained of that revolutionary attempt and of those laborers who were its protagonists.
In 1987 the book "A Portuguese story" was published by Randazzo / focus, Palermo gallery, with an introduction by Antonio Tabucchi.

“Un po’ per quel senso di inutilità e di demotivazione che mi coglie quando, senza una committenza specifica, mi trovo a fotografare degli avvenimenti ufficiali gomito a gomito con decine di altri fotografi; un po’ per la segreta speranza di poter vivere una pagina di storia come quelle immaginate guardando le fotografie delle occupazioni dei latifondi nel nostro meridione del secondo dopoguerra, iniziai a fare ricerche per ritrarre i braccianti agricoli in fermento che si stavano organizzando nel centro-sud del paese.”

Giaccone si reca a Lisbona nell’agosto del 1975, nel momento più caldo di quella “rivoluzione dei garofani” esplosa l’anno precedente. È un freelance senza committenza, quindi libero di scegliere come muoversi. In mezzo alle centinaia di reporters inviati dalla stampa di mezzo mondo, Giaccone cerca storie diverse da raccontare, lontano da immagini già viste. Lascia la capitale e, dopo varie ricerche, approda a Couço, un paesino della provincia del Ribatejo, dove si sta verificando l’importante fenomeno sociale dell’occupazione dei latifondi: braccianti vissuti da sempre in condizione di subalternità, prendono coscienza della loro forza e cercano di occupare e gestire in cooperativa le terre strappate ai padroni. Al ritorno in Italia le fotografie vengono pubblicate soltanto sul quotidiano di estrema sinistra Lotta continua , con le didascalie del fotografo come unico testo.
Per una decina d’anni questo lavoro rimane quasi dimenticato nell'archivio di Giaccone, fino a quando, nel 1985, i ricordi e la riflessione su quell’esperienza riaffiorano nell'incontro con lo scrittore Antonio Tabucchi, scrittore con forti legami personali e culturali con il Portogallo. Nasce l’idea di un ritorno negli stessi luoghi, a distanza di dieci anni, per vedere che cosa sia rimasto di quel tentativo rivoluzionario e di quei braccianti che ne furono protagonisti.
Nel 1987 esce il libro “Una storia portoghese”, pubblicato da Randazzo/focus, galleria di Palermo, con l’introduzione di Antonio Tabucchi.
