Martial law was imposed on Taiwan for about 38 years from 1949 until it was lifted in 1987. This is a biography of Chung Nan Rong (1947-1989), an action thinker who was the first to advocate for Taiwanese independence during this period of strict control of speech. The book reviews the period from 1986, the year of the 519 Green Movement, which triggered the lifting of martial law, to 1989. He was the founder of the Freedom Era Weekly. He is most known internationally for setting himself on fire in support of freedom of speech.
