The book refers to documentation of the massive 1960 protests against the revised security pact (Anpo). This movement, the largest in postwar Japan, involved widespread student, union, and citizen action, driven by anger over democratic suppression and fears of being drawn into U.S. conflicts.
Although the treaty was ratified, the massive protests forced Prime Minister Kishi to resign. The movement reflected deep public resentment against the perceived "unequal" nature of the alliance and US-backed conservative rule.
