This book contains 90 photos taken by Tano D'Amico over the last seven years, most of which have already been published in the daily newspaper Lotta Continua and then reprinted in other newspapers and magazines, or used for exhibitions, billboards and large banners. These images help to commemorate seven years of class struggle. Photography is not neutral; the choice of subject is not neutral, nor is the way in which this subject is remembered. Tano has photographed the protagonists of struggles, their particularities - ranging from a glance to their hands, shoes and caps - and thus their history and the reasons for their struggles. In doing so, he photographed their generality, the common essence that unites them: pluralism, a word that, if adopted in its “current sense”, would relegate the proletariat in struggle to a supporting role, leaving room for company managers, bishops, bureaucrats, generals and machines. Here, it is interpreted in its only possible meaning: the diversity of those who, at heart, have the same idea and the same need.
There are perhaps no sensational events, no ‘characters’, no objectivity: there is a partisan account of humanity and the strength that comes when the exploited come together to change things. Today's technology greatly expands the possibilities of photography: the notebook we present is an invitation to multiply the number of comrades who, with a lens, can reconstruct another history, make it known and, through knowledge, strengthen it. The notebook was produced by Tipografia “15 Giugno”, a printing house set up in Rome with the support of thousands of comrades to serve the needs of the class movement. It costs 1,000 lire per copy. All proceeds from sales will go towards the subscription to the daily newspaper Lotta Continua, which needs to raise 180 million lire by August 1977 in order to survive.
