The popular demonstrations, which began on 19 November and continued until the end of December, against the regime of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, which had ruled the country since 1946, were a consequence of the repression of the demonstrators in the previous days. The latter, holding banners and chanting anti-communist chants, were violently charged by the police. New movements, led by Václav Havel, emerged calling for a more united society and a restructuring of the state. By 20 November, the number of peaceful demonstrators gathered in Prague grew from 200,000 to almost half a million. Faced with this pressure, the Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, Miloš Jakeš, was forced to resign.
