Maggie Murray is a freelance photojournalist and in the 1970s was a member of the Hackney Flashers mixed media agitprop collective. In 1982 she was a founding member of Format Photographers, the women only photographic agency. She travelled widely – covering aspect of development for NGOs, charities, publishers and occasionally newspapers.

The Collection of photographs in this book shows that the basic things of life - water, fire,shelter,the care of the young and the sick, the growing of food - are almost entirely done by women. Because there is no compensation for them, such tiring and boring chores are called "women's work".
