This volume brings together a selection of photographs by Mario Carnicelli (Atri, 1937), a photographer who – as Roberta Valtorta states in her introductory essay – has portrayed humanity in its essence as a social being, rooted in history and belonging to a community with which it shares the events that have shaped its life and identity. Carnicelli’s love of Italian realist cinema and his instinct for screenwriting and framing have led him to capture the notable events, the intense gazes and the everyday gestures of all those anonymous people who make up Italian society – and beyond. Drawn from his vast personal archive, the photographs from the series *C’era Togliatti*—documenting Togliatti’s funeral in Rome in 1964—are displayed, alongside those from *Psicologia della folla*, a series dedicated to demonstrations, assemblies and rallies in Pistoia between 1962 and 1972.
His unique and incisive strength lies not in the narrative or in the recording of events, but in the masterful construction of static, solid documents that take the form of portraits and definitively capture the history of the human community, like monuments.
