Joel Preston Smith served as a photojournalist in the U.S. Army (1987-1991), stateside at the Presidio of San Francisco when it was an active military post (it closed in 1994, in a preemptive strike on the Pentagon’s budget by the U.S. Congress).
He traveled through central and northern Iraq as a freelance journalist, living among Iraqis and Kurds and patrolling with U.S. soldiers. His book is the first comprehensive portrait of Iraqi society during wartime, seen from the perspective of both Iraqi and U.S. soldiers. But this is not a book of military and political analysis; *Night of a Thousand Stars* is a humanistic portrait, heavily focused on Iraqi life, work, and social life during the occupation.
