The book Novas Cartas Portuguesas was published more than 50 years ago, in 1972. Three days after its release, the first edition was seized and destroyed by censors, giving rise to the ‘Três Marias’ trial and a very significant literary and political victory.
Based on this unique work by Maria Isabel Barreno, Maria Teresa Horta and Maria Velho da Costa, the exhibition Women and Resistance — ‘New Portuguese Letters’ and Other Struggles , at the Aljube Museum of Resistance and Freedom, revisited the current state of women's struggle and the contribution of those who, with different origins and backgrounds, invented and carried out battles for their rights, for social justice and for freedom, from the 1930s until 25 April 1974. All these processes highlight the irreplaceable role of women during the 48 years of resistance to fascism and their importance in the conquest of democracy.
The resulting book preserves and expands, with new elements, the testimony of this tribute to all the women who fought.
