Mattraken sabbat is, at the beginning, an exhibition set up by Nic van Bruggen together with Antwerp provo leader Koen Calliauw. It was held at VECU - a private club founded in 1961 created to boost artistic life in Antwerp. Its goal was to depict the often rough handling of the police, and it caused a stir. The police did what was expected of them, invading the VECU and closing the exhibition. Later, in 1968, Van Bruggen publishes the pamphlet Matrakken-sabbat.
