I believe that the real problem of this century will be water, even for countries where it is abundant, as is the case in Chilean Patagonia, where water is everywhere. The study conducted by the two authors, Stella Meyer and Sarah Schneider, examines life around Lake Chelenko, where everything is linked to water and its flow, and takes shape from it. It might seem like we’re talking about something taken for granted, but that’s not the case, and the situation will only get worse. With the Water Code, introduced during the Pinochet dictatorship in 1981 and promoted by the ‘Chicago Boys’, water in Chile can be privately owned and the associated rights are negotiable, thus giving rise to a water market: a phenomenon invisible in daily life but one that has a significant impact on the land, the climate and local employment. I had the pleasure of seeing this project before it reached the final stage of publication, and it was an honour for me to support these young authors in this important project, which concerns us all and will become increasingly relevant, and which concludes with a question: who does water belong to?
