Roni Margulies acquired this album with photographs of the Manakis brothers by pure chance, and his intention to share it with the public came through the printing of this book, and as he writes in his introduction, with the hope that someone seeing these images might initiate some research or write about the characters portrayed. This album of 60 old photographs taken by the Manakis Brothers of Manastır (Bitola) documents the celebrations in the Manastır on the occasion of the first anniversary of the Young Turks' "Proclamation of Freedom" on 24 July 1908. The brothers pasted their photographs into a red-morocco bound album, put handwritten captions under each photograph and presented the work to Kamil Paşazade Süreyya.
As Roni write in his introduction: Why, I finally, do I have this soft spot for the Unionists? Because they were revolutionaries. Because they were fearless, and because they attempted something truly over their heads. Because they had the courage to try and change the course of history though it was not at all their prerogative, though they were not the sons of the ruling class brought up to run the empire.
