Lech Wałęsa (born 29 September 1943 in Popowo) was a Polish politician and trade union activist, one of the main opponents of communism in Poland. He was co-founder and first president of the trade union Solidarity. He was President of the Republic of Poland from 1990 to 1995. He won the Nobel Peace Prize (1983), was named Person of the Year by Time magazine (1981) and among the 100 most important people of the century (1999).
