In 1984, Marcelo Montecino made his last trip to Central America. He spent a week with the Sandinista army and another week with Edén Pastora's Contras (one of the most well-known leaders of the FSNL) on the San Juan River. In 1988, he returned to live in Chile, distancing himself from Central America and his active career as a photojournalist. He travelled throughout the Andean region, developing a more personal style of work with a marked documentary character, without abandoning his initial goal of developing a body of work with a Latin American character. Marcelo Montecino comments: 'I still miss the 12-hour days, breakfast with coffee and pineapple, the sunset over a tropical river, discussions with guerrillas about the armed struggle in Chile, the small village churches, the heavy air of ugly Managua. Sometimes I even feel remorse for not having done more, for not having walked another block along those streets full of pain, for not having stayed another week. Sometimes my photographic eye betrayed me, sometimes my commitment, sometimes my courage. These photos will tell the story."
