The Spanish Transition refers to the period in Spain’s contemporary history when the country moved away from General Francisco Franco’s dictatorial regime and came to be governed by a Constitution that restored democracy within a parliamentary monarchy. It constitutes the first stage of the reign of Juan Carlos I and forms part of the ‘third wave of democratization’, which began in April 1974 with the Carnation Revolution in Portugal and culminated in the fall of the communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe in 1989. Furthermore, following the brief experience of the Second Republic, the Transition constituted the second democratisation process in the history of Spain in the 20th century.
