Algiers. - A catafalque covered with flowers and dominated by a huge Algerian flag. And then, standing motionless in an imposing position of attention, four officers representing the three branches of the armed forces.
The death of Houari Boumediene, both expected and feared because it inevitably ushered in a delicate period, left the population of Algiers, and probably the Algerian people as a whole, in a curious situation, halfway between the temptation to act as if nothing had happened and the desire, at least for activists, to express their grief and concern.
Boumediene came to power in Algeria with a coup d'état against Ben Bella (symbol of the anti-colonial struggle) in 1965 and remained there until his death on 27 December 1978.
