Everbody's Atatürk is a visual journey through everyday life in contemporary Turkey. For the project, Istanbul-born and now Switzerland-based photographer Mine Dal travelled the length and breadth of Turkey in search of traces of the presence of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938), the founder of the Republic of Turkey.
What emerges is a multi-faceted portrait of Turkish society, as the symbolic figure of Atatürk permeates practically every sphere of today's social and public life: from the tailor to the butcher to the greengrocer, in restaurants and schools, from the hairdresser to the shoe shop: everywhere you look you will find Atatürk. Everybody's Atatürk is a real manhunt.
Even more than eighty years after the death of the founder of the modern state, his memory is still alive and widely revered by citizens. Atatürk undertook far-reaching social, legal and economic reforms to modernize and redefine Turkey based on Western models. Mine Dal's photographs show not only 'the Ataturk of all', but also everyday life in the big cities, in the villages of Anatolia and in the coastal and mountainous regions. This meticulous and wide-ranging collection of unique documentary material also reflects the Turkish people's loyalty to a cosmopolitan and open Turkey.
