Around the middle of the 20th century, a group of students decided to sever ties with the traditional nationalist movement, whose figurehead was the PNV, which had become demoralised and stagnant following the death of Lehendakari Agirre and the betrayal of the community. At Txillardegi’s suggestion, that small clandestine group came to be known as Euskadi Ta Askatasuna; a new political movement that would change the course of the history of Euskal Herria. Julen Madariaga, the most optimistic of them all, concluded the meeting by predicting that ETA would soon be better known than EOKA. History proved him right. This work seeks to chronicle, in a visual manner, the evolution of that organisation during the period from 1951 to 1978, transcending—beyond the harsh conditions of repression and clandestinity recounted here—the mere journalistic or historiographical perspective from which its history has been told. In this visually dominated age, the intensive and methodical research carried out sheds new light on the creation of ETA, its militants, relationships, splits, actions and ideology – a perspective which we hope will help both current and future generations to understand a process without which it is impossible to comprehend Basque society, both today and in the future.
