9 April 1948 was an unfortunate day for Colombia. The hopes of an entire people, placed in the figure of the leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitàn, were dashed when he was brutally murdered. The event triggered what went down in history as the bogotazo, a period of protests, riots and repression that took place in the centre of Bogotá, the capital of Colombia. Fifty years later, a photojournalist of the time and ten Colombian writers, including Antonio Caballero, William Ospina, Luis Carlos Restrepo, etc., offer several critical views on the assassination, the popular uprising and the political environment of the time, as well as direct implications in the present day.
