This book is intended to be the first volume in a series designed to illustrate, through photographs, the key events in the country’s history during the 20th century.
Perhaps none of these events, so far this century, has had a greater impact — or more far-reaching consequences — than 9 April 1948. It has become commonplace to say that the assassination of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán split the history of Colombia over the last hundred years in two. However, for the purposes of this book, it should be added that in the 1930s and 1940s, owing to the introduction of modern technical processes in the print media, there was a remarkable boom in photojournalism in our country, which made it possible to familiarise the public with the ‘faithful image’ of those events which, in one way or another, were deemed worthy of appearing in magazines and newspapers. In turn, readers’ growing eagerness to see the ‘face’ of the news meant that photographers of the calibre of Sady González, Manuel H. Rodríguez, Carlos Jiménez, Enrique Benavides, Luis Gaitán, Leo Matiz, Carlos Caicedo and Parmenio Rodríguez, amongst others, were already experienced professionals when they captured the dramatic scenes that unfolded in the capital following Gaitán’s death.
