For fourteen years, the reporter Gervasio Sánchez has doggedly travelled the length and breadth of the world in search of the ‘desaparecidos’ – people who vanished under dictatorships of all kinds. He has photographed mass graves and detention centres, cemeteries, and the homes and rooms where Chilean, Kosovar, Cambodian and Colombian women keep photographs and mementos of sons, husbands or brothers they have never seen again.
A chapter dedicated to remembrance, featuring gravestones, monuments, candles and groups of people – such as those who, in a ghostly sandy desert dominated by a cross, display photographs of their loved ones at the Centre for the Preservation of Historical Memory in Calama, Chile. Equally poignant are the images of everyday objects that belonged to the desaparecidos, from glasses to record players, with which mothers or sisters now have their photographs taken.
