Gian Butturini (1935–2006) documented Chile at length from 1972 – from the first signs of a coup that was already on the cards – right up to this 1987 book, published a year before the plebiscite that would oust the dictator Pinochet. It is precisely Butturini’s writings that tell us of a Chile worn down by too many years of dictatorship and global isolation, helping us to understand the figures who led the nation during those years – from the Brigada Ramona Parra to the Vicaría de la Solidaridad, and from the campesinos to the carabineros – without forgetting the element that has always set his international reportages apart: the human being.
