The occupation of Czechoslovakia began on the night of 20-21 August 1968.
Although the Czechoslovak communist leadership rejected the possibility of armed resistance, in many places unarmed people spontaneously opposed the Soviet tanks. They tried to stop them or at least slow their progress by knocking down road signs or street names. Soldiers of the occupying armies responded to such actions in several places by firing on the crowds of protesters, causing casualties. According to the latest studies, at least 108 people died in Czechoslovakia, 37 of them in Slovakia, and hundreds more were seriously injured.
