At the end of 1947, a silent power struggle was unfolding in Colombia: the solitary power wielded by Mariano Ospina Pérez in the Presidential Palace, and the power of the streets and the vociferous crowds, wielded by Jorge Eliecer Gaitán in his modest law office in the heart of Bogotá. Thanks to the popular fervour he inspired, Gaitán was Colombia's future president.
The ‘Bogotazo’ was a series of riots that shook the capital of Colombia following the assassination of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán. These protests intensified and gave rise to what is known as ‘bipartisan violence’. The assassination of Colombian liberal leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán marked a turning point in the country's history.
