Marc Riboud went to Algeria for the first time in 1960 to cover the week of the barricades erected by the supporters of French Algeria. He then returned regularly and captured the decisive moments of the Algerian people's accession to independence in 1962. Rarely shown in the French press at the time, these images reappear today with undeniable force and emotion, while the "Algerian War" - called the "War of National Liberation" in Algeria - remains a sensitive subject in the collective memory. "I walk backwards, faces, shouts come closer, I no longer even hear the sound of the shutter. I feel that I photograph better. The fervour is contagious, I try not to get overwhelmed. The clamour rises, also a certain state of grace. I improve the framing. And the tenth photo is the correct one. Carried away by the delirious joy of independence, these young people now believe themselves free and happy. What have they and their beautiful dream become today?"
