The photographs taken by Ivan Clemenco on 20 December 2001 are part of the strand of photographic reportage and document a historical moment in Argentina where protesters, predominantly from the working classes, shed a high tribute of blood to show their dissent. On 19 and 20 December 2001, 33 citizens died, including two children and seven teenagers. Witnesses unanimously pointed to the police as the authors of the deaths and in no case were weapons found among the demonstrators.
The December 2001 crisis was a direct response to the government's imposition of "Corral" policies when the government restricted people's ability to withdraw cash from banks. Rioting and protests became widespread on 19 December 2001, immediately following the president's declaration of a state of emergency and his resignation on the following day.
