In March 1973, following the breakdown of negotiations for the renewal of the metalworkers' contract, the Fiat workers in Turin 'occupied' the Mirafiori plant for about a week. It was a form of struggle that arose spontaneously among the workers, which gathered and in some ways synthesized the experience of that workers' community since the spring of 1969. It was a struggle whose radicality and determination went beyond the trade unions themselves. The leadership and organization of this form of struggle had as its main protagonists delegates and workers' vanguards who referred to the trade union left and to extra-parliamentary groups (in particular Lotta Continua). The main characteristic of this occupation was the absolute novelty of the strategies and objectives with respect to previous workers' struggles of this kind. No longer an occupation that guaranteed work and production, but "garrisons" at the gates to prevent the entry and exit of goods, to implement a workers' control over the factory and the total blockade of production.

This book stems from the need to provide comrades with information on the 'Fiat days' that is above all timely and immediate....all this in order to make the political and human dimension of this struggle as clear as possible.

From the incipit of the book.
